Rachel is already standing calmly again, though I catch a flash of emotion in her eyes before she lowers her gaze and straightens the books in her hands. The bookshelf beside us is still swaying slightly, but it’s stable now. A few of the books that almost fell earlier are stacked unevenly near the edge. The smell of paper and ink fills the air around us. I’m still standing too close to her. Only after a few seconds do I realize it. The teachers stood aside, chatting quietly as Molly pointed to different things in her book. “I like your earrings.” Bonnie said shyly.

Her eyes trembled at the plain brown cover. She didn't remember ever seeing the thick book, but a strange feeling tickled her chest.

When my shift ended, I found myself walking toward the corner table where Kael sat, his laptop closed now, a book in his hands.
