I asked, feeling absolutely hurt. “He’s my son, Tessa. Of course, he’ll accept me the moment we meet.” My body froze when I heard the voice of my cousin after four long years. Same stingy sweetness cutting through my heart. I turned around and there stood Raelynn, still same, beautiful, elegant with shorter hairs and same determined glint in those blue eyes. I could see hatred in those eyes for me which she excellently hid with a charming smile. I didn’t see any sign of survival or living a hard life in her appearance. Her skin was smooth and flawless, perfectly manicured nails and the glow, it seemed like she lived the best phase rather than struggling to earn two squares in a day.

The Canine Alpha is standing over Bellamy’s desk, his posture is far more aggressive than I appreciate. “Hi, you might remember me. I’m Ryann Gale. Sorry, I was heading to the kitchen and I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation. Raelynn moaned again and she thrashed on the bed and that only pissed me off more. “Hold her hands ,please l need to see if am right”, She didn’t elaborate but l still listened to her instruction. As lightly as I could, l held Raelynn down to the bed as Zara placed both of her hands on Raelynn’s belly. “I knew it! I knew it”, She said excitedly then she leapt towards Raelynn’s face and held her cheeks.

Light began to blossom under her palms and seeped out against her stomach. Raelynn gasped and groaned with effort and the white glow continued in intensity as her voice rose. She was screaming and pushing herself until the light was so bright, l couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. My grip tightened up on her arm, telling myself that she was still around with me.

But I force myself to stay still, to wait for the right moment. I'm not the terrified fourteen-year-old girl anymore. I'm not Sarah Knight who ran and hid and spent three years looking over her shoulder. I'm Raelynn. I survived him once. I found Gray, found friends, found a reason to fight. And I'm not afraid anymore. When he gets close enough, when he leans down with that knife—I'll be ready. This time, I'm finishing what I started.

Or so Raelynn had thought. Until Brad Kingston came into the picture. Raelynn shoved open the door and jogged across the slick road, boots splashing in puddles. She wasn’t dressed for the rain—frayed jeans, a rust-colored suede jacket, and that turquoise pendant her dad gave her when she turned sixteen. It felt like a charm now. A lucky piece she wore into every gig, even the unpaid ones.

Haylee follows my lead as I march on. “Hey, Raven. Hi Haylee, how are you?” Raymond asks as I stop beside him. He’s one of our top warriors, and he’s leading today’s training. I mutter a hey as I search the group for Finn, and find him in the back of the group flipping his partner over onto his back before kneeling on his sternum. Good job Finn.

Elaine’s POV Riley was a striking presence, her beautiful tanned skin naturally radiant in a way that stood out amidst the pale complexions so common around here. Her dark hair, streaked with vibrant blue highlights, framed her face with a touch of rebellious flair.
