I stare at the black screen of her phone for a moment, then shake my head once. “Not yet.” Rafe raises an eyebrow. “Oh?” He slides the device completely into the Faraday sleeve but leaves it unsealed. “So we’re playing?” “I want him to feel at ease. Let him think he's in control.” Rafe studies me intently now. “Comfortable men tend to make messy mistakes.” “You understand.” He nods slowly, then disconnects the wand and begins to pack away the cables with calm efficiency. Once he’s finished, he snaps the case shut but doesn’t get up right away. Instead, he looks at me with an expression that borders on curiosity.

“Rafe Sinclair.” The guy who arrived last steps forward. He’s lankier than the others, tall—maybe six one—with visible muscle, but still looks like he’s growing into himself. His mousy brown hair is a little wild, like he didn’t even brush it this morning, and it falls across his forehead. His eyes are a deep brown and thoughtful, scanning everything like he’s running calculations. His face is narrow, slightly pinched. He looks like he’s grown too fast, too recently. Acne spreads across his cheeks and forehead. It’s rare to see a shifter with acne. Makes me wonder. “Age, Cadet Sinclair?”

I glance to my left and I see Rafe, he’s standing by the far end of the room leaning against the wall like he doesn’t belong even though he owns it as much as anyone else here. “That’s fair. I did look sexy though. Rafe leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over his tattooed chest. His usual cocky grin sat on his face, but his eyes held a sharp warning tonight.
