“Come on. I’ll take you upstairs to rest.” He stood and guided her toward the stairs. Finn and Calvin exchanged a look. Then they followed right after them. God, I wanted to go eavesdrop so badly. Linda, sitting beside me, muttered under her breath, “Slutty bitch.” That jogged my memory. There was a drugging subplot around this part of the story. If I remembered correctly, Linda was the culprit. She had been secretly in love with Calvin for years, but Calvin only had eyes for Nancy. In the original novel, she managed to drug him, but afterward he turned the tables and dosed her ten times worse, leaving her stranded with no help. She ended up with a terrible fate.

Lyra Raguel pulled me away from the door and stalked me. I took cautious steps backwards until the back of my knees hit the edge of the mattress, and before I could balance myself, he pushed me. I gasped, my head spinning for a split second before I fell backward onto the bed, bouncing slightly on the plush comforter. The lingering musk and sandalwood scent on the sheets wafted in my nostrils. I stared up at him, my heart beating frantically against my ribs. Raguel hovered above me silently, his eyes roaming over me and stripping away my composure layer by layer until I felt naked under his gaze, even though I was still fully clothed.

The doll approached the bed on unsteady legs, its small feet pattering against the wooden floor. Up close, its lifeless face unnerved her, painted lips frozen in a perpetual smile. But those eyes burned with something hungry, something not of this world. A dark spirit, Lila thought wildly, her mind racing to the fantasy tales she loved. The doll climbed onto the bed, its tiny hands reaching out. They were cold, smooth porcelain against her warm skin as it crawled toward her. Lila recoiled, pulling the sheet up like a shield.

A table shatters as Dagar is slammed into it, yet he looks almost amused, as if the fight is entertainment. He drives his hand into Aldous’s chest, sending the King flying back. Aldous drops to a knee, gasping for breath. Dagar gives him no time. Unnaturally fast, he seizes Aldous by the neck and smashes him against a table again and again until Aldous is nearly unconscious. I don’t realize Raphael has left my side until he collides with Dagar, forcing him across the room. Raphael kneels beside his father. “Dad?” I rise to go to them, but Dagar is quicker. In an instant, he is behind Raphael, claws bared, ready to tear him apart.

Besides, we've had too many losses for us to be rivals. “Speak, Wolf, or lose your tongue.” my father thundered. It took a lot of effort to restrain myself from scowling. He was always quick to threaten people's lives. “I…I don't know.” she stuttered, her voice quivering with fear. “You don't know?” Rigel, the High Lord of the Waterborn Dragons, said. The girl nodded frantically. I couldn't tell if she was smart or dumb for not begging for her life. The chances of her leaving the Dragon Keep alive were close to none.
