Chapter Thirteen: Sister of Ash The sky had turned a deep, smoky gray, as though the heavens themselves mourned what was awakening beneath the soil. Seren stood at the edge of the crater, surrounded by the wreckage of her birthright and the screams of the cursed tree that once marked Black Hollow’s sacred heart. Her robes—dark blue with silver embroidery—fluttered with energy. She hadn’t aged past her early twenties, her presence defying time, her expression carved from stone.

Dareios grinned evilly, as if he was relishing in my clear terror and discomfort. I could totally see why Icelus used him as an assassin – the dude was an unfeeling jerk! Although, I really did want to learn how to combat the mist and each time I broached the subject with Zara or Warrick I was told that it wasn’t as important as it was to learn how to fight nightmares. I felt Cassia slip her small hand into mine as she lead me closer to the wall of mist, which reared backward with every step I took. I began to fear that it would crash down on me like a giant wave and that I would die... but it didn’t.

“The fire in your chest is waking things older than dragons.” Rowan’s breath caught. “Older than dragons?” Mistara tilted her head, her expression unreadable. “You think you are hunted because of what you might become. But you are hunted because of what has already been.” Whispers erupted through the room. Rowan stepped forward despite the weight in her legs. “What do you mean? What’s waking?” Mistara’s lips curved into the faintest smile, though her eyes remained distant. “When fire and storm, earth and sky tear each other apart, something buried deep will rise again. And when it does, Dragonheart… choice will be the first thing you lose.”

“Hmm, I can handle it. At least… we can make use of this sudden marriage of my mom’s.” “Lila, didn’t you sleep last night? Your face looks tired and your eyes are red. Did that guy bother you?” “Oh, you always catch me. No, it wasn’t Ryan. They were vicious against enemies, the shapeless assassins and spies that could penetrate the defences of any threat whilst also providing aid to those that they obey. A faint shuddering in the shadows hinted at the appearance of the wolves. They moved cautiously, looking to avoid the last of the dappled light that fell between the pine trees. Slowly their forms took shape like watery images of beasts, their bodies floating and swirling like smoke and mist. Behind the witch, the warriors shifted uneasily, still not used to seeing these curious creatures. “Look, Signe! Do you see them?” Estrid cooed to her daughter, pointing to the first of the shadowy figures that stepped out from the roilin

Ares takes one last look at me, “You come back safe and sound too, alright?” I smile, but I do not answer him. I have to wonder if I will ever see him again. ***** The Sorceress’ spell is cunning. A hurricane of confusion churn around the hut, violent at its perimeters but silent in the center. I raise a hand and black mist seeps out from the pores of my fingers and envelopes the hurricane, forcing an opening for me to step through. I take one last look behind where I come from, glad that Ares is finally out of danger and step through the forced open tunnel by the mist.

“Why? Williams, you’re a firefighter. Don’t you know how toxic smoke is? “I told you that I was pregnant, but you gave the mask to Leia. Now, you’re asking me why I had an abortion? Are you pretending to be clueless?” I did not want to look at him any longer. I was afraid that I might feel disgusted if I did. Williams trembled and tried to hug me. However, Leia suddenly held her forehead and started falling to the side. Coincidentally, she fell right onto Williams. He withdrew his hands and quickly supported her instead.

"Let’s see how strong you’ve truly become—and how well you can handle what’s coming. You must destroy all your enemies completely." "Okay... I’ll try," I nodded, uncertain. "But what objects or foes will I face? Where will I draw my power?" "You don’t need to worry about that," Rensin said with a small smile. "I’ve prepared something much more interesting for you." He raised his hands, and suddenly, a dark mist spread across the ground. “I’ve summoned creatures—evil beasts—resurrected from the dead.” A shiver ran down my spine. “They look terrifying,” I whispered, my voice shaking.

Her eyes were wide, fixed on something in the mist ahead. Through the veil of fog, two crimson eyes glowed — distant, then closer, then gone. The growl echoed once more, reverberating through her chest like a heartbeat. “Do you see that?” she gasped. Fenrak turned — saw nothing. “See what? There’s nothing there!” Rhea’s breath quickened. The forest whispered — her name, soft and stretched — Rhea… Then, out of nowhere, a black, smokey shape lunged from the fog, eyes blazing red. She screamed — and the world shattered.

She made her bed so let her lie in it with my uncle’s sweaty body on top of her. I finished the whisky and hurled the empty bottle at the brick wall. It shattered and amber liquid ran down like blood. I stumbled to the bedroom, taking off my suit and shirt before planting my face on the mattress letting sleep take me. *************************************** Morning came in with a hammer behind my eyes and my phone screaming on the nightstand. I groaned and rolled over as the screen lit up again and again. It was a call from an unsaved number—twenty-seven missed calls and a dozen texts stacking up so fast the preview couldn’t keep up.
