Took one of my children. Ares voice was low. Terrifying. "Who?" The healer looked sick. "I don't know." Not good enough. Not nearly good enough. My silver mist started filling the room. Pouring from the floor. Crawling across the walls. Alive. Hungry. The same mist that had terrified kingdoms. The same mist that had won wars. The same mist that now felt my anger. Ares looked at me. For the first time in months— He looked worried. Not for himself.

I heard a voice ask. I shook my head, and shut my eyes, trying to calm down. “Here, have a bottle of water.” A bottle of water was pressed into my hand, I twisted the bottle open and took a long drink. Because even though I felt like I drowned and was brought out of the water, my throat was parched. I opened my eyes. I blinked rapidly, my vision swimming before slowly coming into focus. White light flooded my eyes from above, harsh and unfamiliar. I could fully focus on my surroundings now. A couple of people were watching me, curiosity and concern etched on their faces.

“We follow the currents. Ignore what the eyes see.” We moved in single file, the mist thickening with each step. Shadows flickered along the trees, forming shapes—faces that weren’t there, hands that reached for us, whispers that called our names. My pulse quickened, but I focused on the shard. It pulsed stronger with every step I took in confidence, guiding me past traps that would have otherwise ensnared us. “Careful!” Bastion hissed suddenly. A root shot upward from the mist, twisting unnaturally toward Dren. He stumbled, and Mara reacted instantly, slashing the root with one blade.

"Eli! I curse you to die a wretched death, with no body left to bury!" So his curse really did come true. I shut my eyes, too drained to feel anything but a hollow calm. And then, something wrenched me upward. The world blurred past, wind screaming in my ears. When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the place I both knew and dreaded: home. It was December 29th. The manor was strung with gold tinsel and paper snowflakes—every corner bright with seasonal cheer. But I felt no warmth. The festive colors only burned my eyes, sharp and unsettling.
