The mark wasn’t Ravenmark’s brand it was something older, more intricate, with curling lines etched like claws around a crescent shape. Her wolf stirred, uneasy. “I’ve seen this before,” she whispered. Damien’s eyes snapped to her. “Where?” “I don’t know,” she said, frustrated. “It’s just familiar.”

“This I made myself.” Alex looked at where she was pointing. He held the scarf’s end closer to the fire. Sewn into the silk-like material was an image of Delmar’s symbol of the Ravennites, the same which Rowan bore on her left arm; the stone sword and the hatchet crossed in an X-shape, and the green arch underlapping them both. Just below the symbol, Alex was able to make out a single word written in the tongue of the Ravennites that read, “Arrun.” Alex had learned enough of their speech to know exactly what it said: “Honor.”

The air in the cavern, Conan’s hideout; was heavy with the scent of damp stone and burning torches. Raven sat at the end of the war table alone, her fingers brushing the edges of the map laid out before her. “It suits you.” Noah glances at me, cheeks pink. “Raven’s is the same.” He turns slightly so they can see the crest clearly, the family symbol bold and sharp, and the blue flame curling around it like living ink. Emily nudges me. “Show yours!” I shake my head, laughing nervously. “It looks just like his.” Noah squeezes my hand. “Same crest. Same flame. Same bond.” Mom’s eyes soften as she looks at me. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart.”

“How can you not like them? They’re so intelligent and beautiful. Look at the way his feathers shine a kind of metallic violet in the light.” He made a series of guttural croaks that had Shirley flinching. “Aren’t ravens an omen of death and disease? No offense to your wolf.” Natalie rolled her eyes at the nervousness in her friend’s voice. “For God’s sake, Shirley, it’s only a bird. Argh. “Raven…” I repeated, rolling his name on my tongue. It sounds so good. But, Raven, isn’t that a kind of bird? A jet black bird, that sometimes feed on the body of the dead. “Ravens are wise, and smart… just like you… it suits you.” I said, and paused before continuing, “but it also symbolizes power, darkness, and death.” I have read it in books, the symbolisms of ravens, however, I think they can be pretty nice, they look mysterious, and wise, and dangerous.
