K A E L O R Nyxara stands between us, the knife still in her hand. The blade hangs at her side, but she hasn’t let it go. Darek is right behind her, close enough that his shadow spills over her shoulder and stretches across the ground at her feet.

But before she could even get close to me, a blur moved between us. At first, I thought it was Damien, but he was by my side and holding my hands. The blur was Blade. His hand shot through the air, and he caught her wrist as though he was catching a thrown pillow. It was effortless. “What the hell,” Lyra hissed, “Let go of me this instant,” she snapped as she struggled against his grip, He didn’t move, nor did he react. All he did was look into her eyes and smile. “Careful,” he said in a soft tone, his words almost conversational, “You don’t want to irritate me,”

Reyona quickly grabbed the girl's hand, not minding the pain it caused her injured hand. The girl stared at Reyona's bandaged hands for a moment before she said “Your hand. Is it paining you?” “No, not at all, baby” Reyona said, even as more tears gushed out of her eyes. Allysyn looked at her face, and it seemed to take her a while before she focused. When she did, she simply said, “You are lying.” Reyona let out a watery laugh that got a small smile out of Allysyn.

What possible explanation could there be for that? She went back to the bathroom to rinse her hair. She toweled it dry and examined herself in the mirror. Platinum blond, like Marilyn Monroe. The comparison was not too comforting. Marilyn had died young. Aya regarded herself with dismay. She looked a lot like the woman she'd recently seen on television. The blond woman killed by a vampire. "This is not my area of expertise, sir." Gustavo twisted a button on his new, bright white lab coat. "Don't worry." Malcolm scooted onto a stool in his lab at Baal corporation. "Besides, how could you hurt me? I'm already dead."

“Yes, Azrael. Aside from that. I feel like Zariah is –” “Is what?” Her voice caught me by surprise, and I turned around just in time to see everyone sent flying through the air away from me. Her damn concealment powers were really annoying. Acelin and Adrian were up within seconds making their way back to my side intent on protecting me. Onyx charged at Zariah, but she was stopped in her place. She still managed to sling a small blade that skinned Zariah’s cheek just as she dodged it in the last minute. “Vampire bitch! You will be the first to lose their life!” Zariah threatened, throwing Onyx against the wall.

She filled them all with mortal dread as she entered her Cyclone Stance and expertly spun around in the middle of them. Her blades followed her as she went, and cut into the terrorists with exacting precision. The Ra’ventrii blade’s razor-thin edges sliced cleanly through their heavy armor and bit deep into the flesh and bone far below. Those around her were almost instantly sliced to ribbons as gouts of blood poured out of their wounds. A few of them made choking sounds as their lives exited their bodies, which began to slowly fall to the ground. It was as though they were gradually realizing just how dead they were.

It filled the hollow left by her stolen wolf, filling it with something she had never known. Strength. Purity. Fury. Destiny. Her spine arched off the ground. Her hair lifted with the surge of energy. The soil cracked beneath her palms as light poured into her. Riley’s last breath drifted gently from her lips. “Thank you…” The light faded. The wind stilled. And the lake went silent once more. While Raya lay motionless for a moment. Then her fingers twitched. Her chest rose, steady, full of life. Her eyes snapped open.

Bram growled. Myrra’s hands moved in a flurry, summoning a burst of violet energy that struck three of them at once. The blast sent them reeling, but they didn’t vanish. Rael knew what had to be done. His blade pulsed again, and this time he didn’t hesitate. He lunged forward, driving his sword through the chest of the nearest shadow. It shrieked as the crimson veins of the blade expanded, drinking in its essence. The creature convulsed before vanishing completely.

She moved like a queen, every inch of her streaked in blood and firelight, even though I could feel her shaking. Inside, the air was thick. Lira sat cross-legged on a fur, her pale eyes distant, silver threads of her seer’s gift still tangled in her gaze. Kael leaned against a wall, arms crossed, a fresh gash bleeding down her temple that she hadn’t bothered to clean. She looked like war made flesh, but her eyes softened when they landed on Rayna. I took my place at Rayna’s side, letting my wolf loom heavy in the small space. Letting them all remember that she wasn’t alone.

The uncontrolled energy wave was so strong it tore through the dampening layers of the training room. In her quarters, Lyra, who had been cleaning the blade of her knife, suddenly froze. Her eyes narrowed. She felt a fluctuation of incredibly dangerous energy. With the speed of an assassin, she shot toward the source. She kicked down the door to the training room, and the scene before her made her curse under her breath. Rayden was on his knees in the middle of a maelstrom of energy, his body trembling, the crystal before him glowing like a sun about to go nova.
