As he falls, my instinct to protect my friend kicks in. “Riley, run! RUN!” I scream as I bolt toward Gavin’s wolf, Blade. “Go!” Riley looks up at me with a drunken, confused expression, then turns to run. He stumbles out of the yard and calls out for me to follow him as he takes off. I can’t follow him. Blade will kill him if I don’t do something. I reach Blade just as he’s ready to pounce on Riley. I throw myself at the giant wolf and tackle him. There isn’t much I can do against an Alpha in wolf form, but I’m able to knock him over and stop him from attacking Riley.

There is no way out. A very powerful force makes the furniture fly around the room, causing me and Olivia to duck down. My knees hurt from the fall on the ground, but my hands hold the sword firmly. I slowly open my closed eyes and I find Eleanor in front of me. "Finally, I'm going to kill you, Rayne." She smirks and I try not to show any sign of fright. “That was too easy.” Nyra pressed both hands to her temples, summoning a wave of lunar‑energy. A hush fell as the world glowed silver under her will. Soldiers froze mid‑arrow‑draw, confusion spreading like a tide. Some dropped to their knees, clutching heads in pain. Ryker’s blue‑grey eyes sparkled. “You’re incredible.” She allowed herself a small nod. “Hush.” Then she thrust her glowing blades through the nearest crossbow crew. Fletchings of darkness fell as lunar‑flame consumed steel.

“Yes. I don’t know how, but… I heard you say I’m brave, and that I’m safe here.” Calista’s mouth fell open, but before she could respond, the door creaked open, and the healer came in carrying a bowl of herbal soup usually given to the wolves who have just given birth. Sable was a small, wiry woman in her late 50s with sharp eyes that missed nothing, and she had a calming presence that had been a godsend during the chaos of my labor. “Sable,” Calista said, her voice still laced with shock. “Lyra just… she said she can hear my thoughts.”
