Winter POV The pack grounds never looked like this before. Strings of orange lanterns hung between the trees, glowing like small captured suns. Looked like I was going to make story time after all. There was a nice weekend crowd at the store. I positioned Mahina behind the small crowd and off to the side where she would have a better view. Crouching down, I pilfered a few items. A fake fur wolf-tail belt, a knitted wolf hat with tassels hanging down, fur cuffs around the ankles and wrists that sold well during Halloween. I snuck behind the bookcase. The girl that was doing the book reading had already chosen a book. I pushed a certain book forward, letting out a whine.

"The perimeter is leaking, and the undead have already found the seam. Clear the courtyard in two days. Every single one." A chill ran down my spine as I remembered the old northern stories—rotting jaws still snapping long after their legs had been severed, hollow bodies that kept tearing and feeding with no scent and no pain. They never stopped. I swallowed the fear rising in my throat and lifted my chin. "Fine. Give me the weapon."

It pulses once, like a heartbeat. I swallow hard. Strange things have always happened when I’m upset, lights flickering, books falling, dreams that feel too real, but this feels different. It was seven in the evening when everyone arrived and the table was busy. After we all are, the ladies went in to do the dishes while we made the bonfire placing camp chairs around it.
