I swallowed, eyes burning, and looked out across the yard at the people moving through their routines like life wasn’t fragile.
Behind me, the back door creaked open.
Rook stepped out, eyes scanning, then flicking to my face like he’d felt the shift.
“You get something,” he said, not a question.
I held up my phone, my hand shaking just a little. “Yeah.”
Rook read the message without taking the phone, then nodded once. “Good,” he said, though his expression stayed hard.
“It doesn’t feel good,” I whispered.
Rook’s gaze stayed on the yard. “It’s not supposed to,” he replied. “It’s supposed to keep you breathing.”
