OFFSTAGE, on my Mind
I stood there, heart thumping, staring at the hallway like it might open up and swallow me.
Then Drew’s voice cut through again, harder.
“This is exactly why you need to go to therapy,” he said. “Because you cannot keep white, knuckling your way through life and calling it strength.”
Jace laughed once, short, humourless. “Therapy isn’t going to make interviews fun.”
“No,” Drew said. “But it might keep you from burning out at nineteen.”
Silence again.
I should’ve backed out and pretended I’d arrived later.
Instead, my traitor feet took one step forward, then another, quiet, cautious, like I was approaching a sleeping bear.
