the old man continued, eyes gleaming, “but a creature—ancient and starved—that disguises itself in bark and moss. It waits. Hungers. And when the moon is thin, it feeds.” He ended the story with a dramatic swish of his cloak and sat back down as the fire popped and sparked. Ryan leaned toward me, smirking. “Ten gold coins says that story’s based on a real thing.” I rolled my eyes. “You’re probably right.” After some time, I stood. “I need to… step away for a minute.” Ryan nodded. “Don’t get eaten by any whispering trees.” “Thanks for the vote of confidence.” I slipped away from the firelight.

Any act of kindness out here was worth acknowledging. Soon enough, they started to talk. Stories, some funny, others dark. One spoke of a creature that prowled these woods, an ancient spirit that hunted lonely travellers and fed on their voices. Another swore that he once saw a woman in white walking just beyond the trees, her eyes hollow, her fingers covered in blood. The rider shivered and moved closer to me. But I didn’t move. I only listened, watched, and tried to determine whether these stories were meant to entertain us or warn us.

The maid made a gesture of silence to another maid. I stood at the door, dumbfounded. What were they just talking about? Did Ragnar’s fifth mate also see a female ghost at night? Did the ghost also demand the ring? And she was so terrified that she passed away on the spot? So everything I saw the previous night was real. I started the journey, I walked for two hours, and I wasn’t scared as I had my sword, my backpack and myself. I got to the river. I was thinking of sleeping there but then I started hearing voices and it seemed like the cold night river. I have heard about that river and how it can be. It is a place where spirits roam but it is famous for the Tell Tale spirit. The Tell-Tale spirit is a spirit that appears to tell you your future and it is always bad, it rarely comes out though, it has been disregarded as one of those old stories. I turned around to get away from the river and then it became extremely foggy all of a sudden and cold too, fear gripped me immediately and I knew I was in for it.

Wallace gulped nervously, asking, “Is this the rumored diabolical reaper, Mr. Rockefeller?” “Master, I think that is nothing more than mere folklore. Ghosts do not exist in our world. This is just an illusion!” said Jim. Wallace smacked his student on the head. “What do you know? There is more to this world than we will ever understand! The diabolical reaper really exists. I witnessed one in my younger days. Instances of its appearance had also been recorded in various literature passed down through the generations. Unfortunately, I was never allowed to learn the art of shamanistic healing,” Wallace said with a tinge of regret in his reply.

Ghosts aren't real ' I turn around in an instant , almost getting a whiplash and look behind . There was ... Nothing there. I sigh with relief . I must have imagined it . They say that stress and sleep deprivation can affect the brain in many ways that scientists are just beginning to understand . It must be some sort of hallucination . I should get some sleep .
