Words like these seemed straight out of a melodramatic novel, where a gullible male protagonist got easily manipulated. Vance appeared to fit that role perfectly. Please—all she desired was to sit through this flight in peaceful silence, without any further disturbances from them. Yet Catherine seemed determined to make that impossible, as she turned her head once again and called out, "Rebecca, what are you reading there?" "Just something to pass the time," Rebecca replied dismissively, closing the book. "A French book? You can understand it? Cool!" Catherine exclaimed.

Her genuine concern for her employer was heartwarming. “There you are!” Rebecca called out when she spotted us. She ran up to us and held me in a tight hug. “Thank you. If you didn’t put in good word for me to your editor, I’ll never have published my book.
