Recorder Notes Titanic Novels & Stories

Everyone blinked against it. And that's when Emma saw it — a thin red light, blinking on the side table by the couch. A recorder. Someone had been recording the whole conversation. But it wasn't hers. And it wasn't Lucas's. "Whose is that?" Lucas asked, staring at it too. His flashlight was still on, useless now, hanging loose at his side. Victor's eyes went straight to it. His face went pale, whiter than Emma had ever seen it. "That," he said slowly, "was not supposed to be on."

He pulled out a small digital recorder and placed it beside the envelope. "A recording?" Vanessa's voice was barely a whisper. "He was paranoid. He recorded all his phone calls. Including the one where he was hired. He thought it would protect him if things went wrong." Vanessa stared at the recorder. Her hands were trembling. "Did you listen to it?" "Yes." "And?" The investigator met her eyes. "You should hear it for yourself." He pressed play. The recording was scratchy, distorted by time and cheap equipment, but the voices were clear enough. The driver's voice, gruff and wary. And another voice—calm, measured, utterly without emotion.

It was consideration. “If you want it to be.” He turned slightly toward me, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose in that absentminded way of his. “So, just to be clear,” he said, his voice thoughtful, “the recorder is still with Susanna?” “Yes,” I confirmed. “But I have access to the files. I made sure to copy them onto my phone from the app connected to the recorder. There are hours of recordings saved, possibly more than I even realized. I’m certain that if you comb through them, you’ll find something incriminating, whether it’s on Susanna or Conrad.”

Stamped 1212. And a cassette. I stared at it. Not another one. Lucian picked it up. Handwriting across the label. T.B. Thomas Bennett. My chest tightened. "Thomas recorded this." Daniel found an old tape player in the cabinet. "Analog." Of course. Lucian looked at me. "Your choice." I appreciated that more than I could say. "Play it." Daniel inserted the cassette. Static. Then my father's voice filled the room. "If you're hearing this, Margaret succeeded."

Alejandro's heart raced as he tightly gripped the compact voice recorder in his hand, his anticipation growing with each step. Upon reaching the restroom door, he entered and swiftly locked it behind him. The peaceful solitude of the restroom provided the ideal backdrop for his covert mission. Alejandro's hands trembled slightly as he initiated the voice recorder, hoping to capture the elusive secrets that had transpired. As the audio playback commenced, Dave's and the woman's voices emanated from the device's small speaker. Their whispers were low, but the recorder faithfully captured their words with clarity. Alejandro's breath caught as he listened intently.

On the top, in handwriting I didn't recognize but felt I should: for Maya. I stood in the doorway. Damien put his hand on my back, not pushing, just present, and I walked in. The box held six items. I took them out one at a time and set them on the table. A notebook, spiral-bound, filled with handwriting that covered every page including the margins. A recording device, small, the kind used for research in the early 2000s, with a single tape inside. A folded document, official, with a seal I recognized from the Accord's correspondence.

Evelyn’s POV: We all looked at one another. Sophie was here? After thinking for a moment, Nathan said, “Sophie is probably here to see me, so I’ll handle her. Mr. Porter, take everyone to another room.” Mr. Porter guided us to a separate room. “Nathan.” Lucas tossed something toward Nathan. Nathan caught it reflexively and looked at what was in his hand. “It’s a recorder. It records everything, and we’ll be able to hear the audio on our end at the same time.”

“That is a live recording of that night. Ladies and gentlemen, what do you hear? Violence, pain, and the cries of an innocent girl begging for her life.” I listened closely to the recording, catching every detail. The heavy breathing… The thuds… The background noise… Wait. “Can you play that again?” I asked suddenly. “Why?” Gavin asked, on guard. “I want to listen to the details.” The recording played again. This time, I focused on the background sounds. The breathing… the impacts… Tiffany’s whimpers… And… a bird call. A nocturnal bird. “Interesting,” I said under my breath.

Inside, the Sacred Stone fragment pulses with faint rings of gold light in the dying torch glow. Elias takes his time securing the injector. As he passes me, med kit in hand, his stride hitches for a strange half-second. A dark glint moves behind the gold-rimmed glasses. He doesn't look up, but his voice drops to a register only the two of us can hear. Three words. Barely a breath. Impossibly fast. *The recorder. Mine.* My heart skips a beat. That fatal recording. The one that nailed Vivian to the executioner's block. Slipped to her by him.

Silence followed. Then he added quietly— “He won’t get far.” I reached into my pocket slowly. My recorder had been running since I entered. Every word. Every sentence. Captured clearly. This wasn’t just observation anymore. This was evidence. Solid. Unaltered. Real. I remained perfectly still. Recording. Listening. Absorbing every detail. Every tone. Every hesitation. Every implication. ⸻ Then— My foot shifted slightly. It brushed against something on the ground. I glanced down briefly.
