Alpha's Substitute Bride
Dean, caught off guard and incapacitated, gasps for air, his diaphragm locked, unable to let him cry out despite the fierce urge.
Maria, momentarily thinking she's thwarted an intruder, crouches beside Dean, pouring forth apologies. She doesn't realize that the ringing in his ears and his pain have left him momentarily deaf to her words.
Once Dean's lungs finally allow him to exhale, he draws a deep breath, like a diver emerging from the depths, gasping for life. Seeing him in such discomfort, I anxiously ask if he needs medical help. He dismisses the idea, but requests a little support to regain his footing. Maria and I position ourselves on either side, gently lifting him upright.
