Eleanor appeared, older now, staring directly at the camera as if she were looking at them in real time. “Hello, my sons,” she said softly. Elias froze. Maya’s breath hitched. Eleanor’s smile widened. “Welcome home.” Then the screen went dark.

I grab the remote from my desk, aim it at the flatscreen mounted on the wall, and click it on. The news channel loads, and— No.

Groaning in annoyance, she left her room, going down to see what had happened. Gabriel stood with her parents, two bright palm prints on his face. “What happened?” Eileen asked, rushing to Gabriel. She grabbed his face with her two hands, turning it to look at his face properly.

“You need to see this.” Panic surged instantly. “What happened?” Instead of answering, Nina lunged for the television remote. The giant screen mounted above the fireplace flickered to life. She switched channels rapidly. Then stopped. And suddenly there she was. Elara Velcro. I sat bolt upright. The broadcast was live, a press conference. Elara stood behind a polished podium emblazoned with the Velcro Conglomerate insignia, the company logo gleaming beneath bright camera flashes. Rows of reporters filled the room.
