FAT, BARREN, AND REJECTED
I asked, my voice rougher than I intended.
“A note regarding a missing item, logged the following morning.” Corwin’s expression remained carefully neutral, though I caught something almost sympathetic beneath it. “A wallet, reported by hotel security as found in the suite’s private washroom, apparently having fallen from a jacket pocket during the evening’s events. It was logged, held by hotel security for several weeks, and eventually released to an unclaimed items auction when no one came forward to retrieve it.”
I sat back slowly, the last piece of my carefully constructed resentment finally, fully collapsing under the weight of documented, undeniable fact.
