She emerged, panting, the fresco hidden under her robe.
A maid looked up from scrubbing the floors.
"Are you alright, miss? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I have," Ceres muttered.
She hurried back toward her quarters, clutching her side.
Each torch she passed flickered oddly, almost like they were whispering.
Back in her room, she bolted the door, ripped up the floorboard beneath her bed, and slid the scroll and image inside beside the ghost bloom petal.
"You're not just bonded to her, Xavier," she whispered. "You were meant for something else."
