"Thanks. Got a book in mind?" "Yeah, 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald," I say, and she points me to where it might be. "Just one left should be along that wall. Good luck." With that, she heads back to her desk. After about 10-15 minutes of searching, I finally spotted it on the fifth shelf. As I reach for the book on the fifth shelf, I find myself stretching on my tiptoes, struggling to grab it. But then, I start to tip backward, almost taking a tumble.

“Nice try, but stay on topic. Give me more, what’s the green light say about the American Dream?” I sighed, flipping open the book to a dog-eared page. “It’s all about wanting something you can’t have. Gatsby’s obsessed with this perfect version of Daisy, but it’s a fantasy. The light’s like… hope, but it’s also a trap, because it’s always out of reach.” Meredith nodded, her expression impressed. “Not bad. Now, let’s look at this passage…” She slid the book toward me, pointing to a highlighted section.

Since she had woken me up from sleep and I couldn't go back to bed, I decided to read my favorite novel of all time – The Great Gatsby. I closed the book as soon as I heard loud sounds coming from Justin's apartment. "Is that? Oh my God, that is Grace moaning." I said with the realization. How shameless can they both be? I had a feeling she was deliberately doing that to spike me up and it was working. I tried to concentrate and go back to the book I was reading but her moans were just getting louder – I needed to get out of here. I picked up my phone and dialed Stella's number. "Sure, thanks." Gabby's face suddenly turned grim. She reached over the counter, subtly pulled Eleanor closer and whispered to her, saying "Dear, return this book to me. Only me and no one else. Hold unto it till you see me. If not, don't let anyone else have it." Eleanor listened intently and nodded. Something very important was embedded in the book. Something crucial enough to scare Gabby. "Erin, please go ahead." "Erm, I'll go," Scarlett said, standing up. She knew Erin had forgotten her work and to be honest, she wanted to get hers out of the way. As she read her report on The Great Gatsby, looking out at the sea of bored faces, she noticed Miss Walters staring into space; her eyes glazed and unblinking. 'I wonder what Adrian meant,' she thought but had to keep her mind from wandering too far. As she finished, she stood, letting her cards drop to her sides as she smiled awkwardly, waiting for the teacher to say something.

The unfocused attention of letting something arrive in its own time. He stopped in front of the fiction section. Looked at a shelf. Reached out. Pulled a book without looking at what it was. Turned it over. Read nothing on the back. Just held it. The woman at the register was watching him. He could feel it.
