That night, I read until my eyes blurred. The pages were filled with ancient script, but the drawings told their own story—two figures locked in battle: one made of fire, the other of shadow. Beneath them, the earth cracked open and swallowed the world. They were born of the same spark, the text read, but one sought to consume while the other sought to protect. And when the balance was lost, the Fire and the Shadow turned on each other. My breath caught as I flipped to the next page. A symbol burned there—the same mark that glowed on my wrist whenever my power rose. The text beneath it was smeared, but a few words stood out:

Nora said, her eyes wide with fear. "We just have to go home, but we will never speak of this again. Not among us not to anyone." Reggie said while still trying to control his breath. Alice brought out her inhaler from her backpack and hurriedly took some puffs from it. "Didn't know you were asthmatic." Nora said. Alice glared at her. "No offense," Nora said. "Can we focus on the main issue here?" Reggie said. "This incident should follow us to the grave. It's not cool to be caught up in a murder case and definitely not the way we planned to spend our sophomore year." Reggie said.

“You left me in the dark, little crown of fire.” She smiled. Not kindly. “I didn’t leave you. I buried you.” --- The fight was never fair. I met it mid-air—knives flashing like fallen stars, Each strike draws screams from the shadow. It bled memory. And every time I cut it, it laughed. But it wasn’t here for me. It wanted her. Its limbs bent wrong—reaching for her with tendrils that remembered her name. “Ring of Ash. Flame That Would Not Bow.”

“The third Gate calls for betrayal. It won’t have to wait much longer.” Before he could strike— A wolf from the hunting party hurled into the circle, fangs bared, eyes blazing. Malric. He took down two skeletal wolves before he was pierced through the side. Lyra screamed. But it gave her just enough time. She reached inward—past her fear, past her pain— Into the fire the Gate had left in her. And let it unleash. ⸻ Flames erupted around her in a shockwave. The ring shattered. The Hollowed Ones screamed.

“The fire… it was bound here. This is where it began.” Images cascaded in Evelynn’s mind: wolves forming from sparks and smoke, creatures of shadow clawing at the light, hunters bending the magic for power, and a girl—her reflection twisted in the flames—standing alone, fire blazing in her hands, facing them all. “It’s… me,” she whispered, voice shaking. “It’s always been me.” Aiden’s grip on her hand tightened. “Not just you. It’s us. You and the fire and the bond we share. That’s why it’s drawn to you. That’s why it’s hunting you. Because it knows the fire can’t be controlled without… without you.”

Their claws clashed with my fire, and the heat that erupted blasted back through the field, knocking down trees and sending gravel skittering across the stone steps. Every strike I took, I felt their whispers in my bones: “Submit, child of fire. Return to the fold.” But I did not bend. I burned. And burned hotter. Link howled, shifting mid-strike, his claws shredding one of the creatures before they even landed. We moved in unison—his violence precise, mine volcanic. Three fell. Then four more. But it wasn’t over. From the treeline came a sound—low, guttural, almost human. And from the mist, a single figure stepped forward.

Stripes. Burning across my body like fire. The air itself seemed to change. The wolves hesitated. Just for a second. That was their mistake. I moved. Faster than before. Stronger. Unstoppable. I tore through them. No hesitation now. No strategy. Just dominance. One after another. They fell. Until only one remained. Celdor stepped forward. Finally. I tilted my head slightly, blood dripping from my jaw. “You should have stayed hidden.” He didn’t respond.

A pull that makes it hard to fucking breathe sometimes. Every second I picture how she will feel under me. How her breath will sound when my lips touch her neck. How her fingers will claw my back when she cannot take more. How she will scream my name when I finally break whatever walls she hides behind. The thought alone makes my pulse heavier, slower, darker. I have never felt this with any woman. Not even close. Lisa walked into my life carrying chaos dressed as calm. Fire disguised as innocence. She makes me lose control in a way nothing else ever has.

Lucian: “We made a promise the night the lake tried to take our truths. We’re keeping it.” Kayo sits up, tails curling tight. Kayo: “Family isn’t a place you leave when the season changes.” Rowan closes his sketchbook of starlight. Rowan: “Then we don’t leave.” He stands, walks to the center of the field, and draws one perfect circle in the turf with his toe. Inside it he writes six names in glowing script (ours). Then he slams his palm down. The ground answers. A ring of pure white fire erupts around the circle, shooting fifty feet high, then collapses inward and sinks into the earth like it was never there.
