I say as I race to catch up to Brooke. “Bye, Mom! We’ll be back soon!” Cyrene says. “Don’t go too far, Iniko. You’re getting close to your first shift,” she calls out. “We’re just going to the mountain,” I call back. “Go, Kiko, go!” Cyrene says, encouraging me to catch up to Brooke. I love that Cyrene is nine years old and still calls me Kiko. She’s the only one who does. It’s just like she still calls Cal Calgon. No one cares to correct her because she’s Cyrene.

Against my better judgment I let Nico take me out to dinner instead of getting the food to go. I realized that would mean going home sooner with Nico, and I prevented that for as long as I could. However, now we are home, well, Nico’s home. Nico has four homes. One, a condo in the best part of the city. It’s his private place and that is where he has has taken me thankfully. He was about to type something teasing in response when his phone lit up with an incoming video call from Nico. He answered, and Nico’s face filled the screen, grinning, a little jet-lagged, but clearly excited. The background showed a neatly arranged dorm room with a wide window letting in soft morning light. “You got there safe?” Rafael asked, adjusting his position on the couch. “Yeah, I arrived late last night,” Nico replied, the camera showing his dorm in the background. “Didn’t get much sleep, but I woke up early and found this really nice restaurant near my dorm. I have been walking around so much, I think my legs are planning revenge.”
