"Maybe you just haven't given me much to laugh about." "Fair point." We kept talking about nothing important from books to movies to even high school experiences. That one time in high school when I broke my arm falling off a roof trying to get a frisbee. The time he got food poisoning before a championship game and played anyway. Forty-five minutes passed before I even noticed and when I looked at the clock it was hard to believe we were rivals who hated each other's guts with the way we were talking like friends who actually liked each other.

I readied my stance, my muscles tensing. "It’s a friendly fight, right?" Raven squeaked from the corner. Neither of us answered. While we weren't enemies anymore, neither of us was the type to give in to the other. There was still a competitive edge between us that needed an outlet. I could see her sitting upright out of the corner of my eye, watching us attentively. Darian and I began to circle one another, keeping an eagle eye on every shift in weight, every twitch of a muscle. Then, Darian charged.

The opposing team’s colors, deep crimson and black were swarming the neutral zone, led by the one man who existed just to ruin my life. Ryder Volkov. His black hair was damp with sweat, clinging to his forehead, and his blue eyes were fixed on me with. I knew he had the most annoying smirk underneath his helmet. I really hated this guy and words didn't do justice to how I felt about him. "Watch your back, Elias," Jason yelled, but it was too late.

It was never easy to unite with a rival pack, especially when so much bad blood lay between us. An elderly warrior, his golden hair streaked with mud from a recent training session, raised his hand. "But Alpha, can we trust the other pack? They've been our enemies for generations. How can we be sure they won't betray us?" The Alpha nodded, acknowledging the concern. "I understand your fears, but we must look beyond the past if we are to secure our future. We have received assurances from their Alpha, and we have agreed upon a way to solidify our alliance."

"It still wasn't difficult at all." He kept his hands in his pockets and gazed at the sunset, his tone lazy. "No matter how much we compete, it always comes back to the two of us." We looked at each other and smiled. That was right. In the end, we were each other's only rival. That felt pretty satisfying, too.

Students crowded the stands in house-colored scarves, faces painted, throats raw from yelling. The leaderboard towered over the stadium like a guillotine, each new update drawing screams or groans. The second half of the Trials had begun. And no one was playing nice. Rivalries that had simmered during the first week were now frothing. Valiant had accused Dominion of sabotaging their climbing gear. Titan had gotten into a brawl with Prestige. Royal was in shambles—half their team hadn’t shown up to practice, and their leader was supposedly crying in the conservatory.

It had been eight years since they died and it has not been easy. They were killed by a rival pack attack. Rival Pack/Packs are enemies of a pack. Every pack has rivals and they do everything possible to protect themselves from their rivals. Mostly, the contest amongst rivals is for them to dominate and take over the other pack. They normally launch ambushes against one another, just to take the other pack down. It was in one of these rival attacks that my parents were killed. I was just a little but could distinguish between good and bad.

He said underneath his breath. Within a few minutes everyone was back on the pitch, the Ravens were ahead of Greenmay with 15 points, the next few minutes was the only time they had to proof themselves. Allen was mad, all his life he had to compete with Arson because of the rivalry between the two clans. If Arson went hunting and killed a bear, Allen had to kill more just to prove his worth.
