Enzo remarked irritably, not looking at me as he bit into his bread. A wave of guilt hit me. I regretted causing Riza to worry, so I took her small hand from the table and squeezed it gently to express my apology. She looked up and smiled sweetly at me. I decided to engage her in conversation to further brighten her mood. "How's school, baby?" I inquired with a smile. "Are you making friends? Are you enjoying their company?" Riza nodded, chewing on a slice of chicken nuggets she had just popped into her mouth. "I have thwee fwends in school," she said, showing me her three tiny fingers. "Sofia, Ashton, and Selena. I weally love school..."
