Uncle's Good Girl
He looked at it, then at Catherine, his eyes bright.
"My mother-in-law's," he said quietly.
"For the wedding," Catherine said, sitting down.
Trenton reached across and squeezed Catherine's hand. She nodded in approval, no words were needed.
Later, after dessert and coffee, as we were preparing to leave, Robert pulled me aside while Trenton helped Catherine with her coat.
"He was a good husband to my daughter," Robert said. "He was patient and devoted. She loved him completely." He looked at me steadily. "But she's been gone three years. He deserves to love again."
