Another woman rolled in a giant board covered with cake designs. Each one looked like a building. Some had five layers. Some had seven. One looked tall enough to need an elevator. I stared at them. “Why are they so tall?” I asked. “They symbolize prosperity,” the planner explained proudly. I pointed at the tallest one. “That one symbolizes back pain.” Marco snorted again. Every corner of the hall has something fun: a candy floss machine spinning pink clouds, a popcorn stand, and tables filled with treats and juice boxes. Now, it's time for the highlight of the day. A large, extravagant three-tiered birthday cake was rolled out, illuminated by the soft glow of flickering candles. It was a masterpiece: the bottom tier a deep chocolate adorned with intricate golden swirls and rich red roses; the middle tier a classic vanilla, decorated with delicate lace-like patterns and silver pearls; and the top tier a striking strawberry, covered in a smooth white fondant with a single elegant rose at the center.

The topping is what caught my attention. The cakes are topped with blobs of cream, small light-pink meringues, baby pink and white macarons, fresh strawberries, white chocolate truffles, and fresh, delicate flowers. "Oh my, that is such a beautiful cake! Thank you!" I say, in awe of the cake that looks like an artwork. "Oh, sure babe! We wanted to make today special for you." Alexia winks at me. Do you like your party?” Holding him close to myself, I gently sway from side to side, watching as his eyes dart toward the corner as soon as he hears my answer, searching for the cake as though it might appear any second. Right on cue, four staff members enter, wheeling in the large cake. It is really enormous, towering four tiers high– each layer is decorated with miniature, edible models of planets, along with a little astronaut climbing up the side.

As she mentions, the power in the office has been restored; some of the colleagues bring in some glasses and open up some champagne; some of them start to cut the cake and distribute them with paper plates and plastic forks to everyone, including Jamie and me. I sit down at my coffee table by the window and look at the cake. The cake is made of mint chocolate ice-cream. Although I like ice-cream, and also chocolate now, I know it is quite offensive to say this, but I am not really a fan of mint. It was a massive chocolate structure shaped like a mountain, with a hollow center filled with bright red strawberry frosting that oozed down the sides like real lava.
