I always talk to you about their grand gestures, and yeah… that’s why you mentioned them.” “I bet I’m now the antagonist in your story,” I chuckled a little, but apparently, she didn’t find my comment funny. “No, you’re not. Long enough for me to remember who I was before I met him. Turns out, I actually like romance novels. Not the tasteful literary romances Kenneth approved of. I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).

A smile crept onto my face as I adjusted my grip on the novel, its cover barely hiding the kind of story that made my heart race. A dark, depraved mafia romance. It had a male lead who didn’t ask permission so much as demand surrender. A man who played with consent the way a composer toyed with notes—artfully, deliberately, with the kind of confidence that made my skin prickle and my thighs press together. One that was over too soon. The kind of book I devoured in a fever and now I was in need of another. Most folks wouldn’t think of the local library as a treasure trove of scandalous reads, but I knew better. The librarians were in on the secret, intentionally filling the shelves with books

“No. That you read books like these.” At that, my hackles rose. I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with romance novels. Sometimes they could be so amazing that my mind was blown. But when they were bad, well, they were bad. Since I’d been reading them for many years now, I felt like I could criticize them fairly. But when someone—especially a man—talked derisively about romance novels, I always got defensive. I could call them trash, but nobody else could. “Do you want me to hit you upside the head again?” I held up the book. “Because I will if you keep going with that subject.”

He wasn’t sure how to answer Wilson’s question. “It’s nice to read this genre occasionally.” He could only come up with such an answer. “So, are you saying that you do read romance novels once in a while?” Wilson asked. “My girlfriend is quite fond of it, so I will flip through them occasionally. She mostly reads it online, though.” “Tell me, why do women like to read such books?” Wilson touched the book. “Do they anticipate the romance in it?” “I guess so. My girlfriend will be talking about how much she envies the female lead because the man treats her like a princess when she reads about it,” Frank couldn’t help but complain.

Yes, yes, I did. “In fact, I think all men should read romance novels. They wouldn’t be so bad in relationships. Actually, they could learn a lot.” Was my final sentence as I huffed out, done telling them about the romance series I was reading. “Are we done now?” Ryan asked, seeing how hopeful he was. I had tortured him way too much; I felt bad pushing on. “Yep, that’s where I am right now.” I said back gleefully, lucky for him, or he would be hearing more about the brooding single cowboy dad who was too prideful to realise he was in love with his assistant.

I just needed to keep my guard up. “My life is filled with the paranormal, but romance? Don’t make me laugh.” I scoffed. “If you think your behavior is romantic, you should educate yourself. There’s a whole bookcase worth of study material.” I gestured to the bookcase where I’d take A Queen Among Snakes off. “You know romance is a two-way street. It’s not my fault you don’t appreciate my gestures.” Aidan kissed my neck, this time higher, closer to my ear. “But if you want me to learn from your smut books.”
