He stepped inside and shut the heavy door behind him with a quiet, terrifying click. "Are you awake, Cora?" his deep, gravelly voice rumbled in the dark. "Yes," I answered, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to sound brave. "Good," he said simply. He walked slowly to the foot of the bed, a dark shadow blocking out the moonlight. I could hear the faint, expensive rustle of his clothing as he removed his suit jacket. "This is Clause Twelve," Roman stated coldly. "The execution of our agreement." I pushed myself up against the heavy silk pillows. I absolutely refused to lie flat on my back like a helpless victim.

Everyone was talking about the mission they went on last night when the better part of the world was asleep. Before I could say anything else, there was a knock on the door. Romano entered, sparing me a glance before looking at Lorenzo. “All twelve went down, boss. No survivors.” Lorenzo smirked. “Good.” Romano looked like he wanted to discuss more but glanced at me again and thought better of it. “I’ll go check on Lucia.” He was gone after that, leaving Lorenzo and me alone once again. I shook my head. “You’re too calm for someone who burned half the city last night.”

Romano exclaims right behind me. Hearing his voice so close to me makes my skin crawl. “Father!” Stefan shouts furious. “Ro, you promised you were going to behave tonight. It’s Christmas Eve,” Agatha mutters as angry as Stefan. Romano rolls his eyes back. “It was a joke. Relax,” Romano acts like it’s no big deal. “You get it, right?” He says to me. I give him a thin smile. Don’t worry asshole, I’ll get back at you.
