“Charity?” In this house, the word felt counterfeit.
“You’ll be serving champagne,” he continued. “Wear flats, you’ll be on your feet.”

She swallowed the odd flutter in her chest. “Good night, Alonso.”
He descended the grand staircase, footsteps fading into hush.
