She turned her head back toward the light, looking at the tiny, peaceful face of her baby in Ivan's arms one last time. A soft, devastatingly beautiful smile touched her lips. She looked back at me, her eyes clear, completely stripped of the lies and the manipulation that had defined her entire life. “Take care of my baby,” she said in English.

Alberto helps me mount a gentle chestnut mare, his hands lingering a little too long on my waist. We ride side by side along the trails, the morning sun warm on my face.
