In an instant, her jaw dropped, witnessing the unusual features of every animal. One had four eyes, while others had flowers growing from their antlers. The critters on the woman’s lap moved, softly bumping their scarlet nose against her. Their gem-like eyes widened as their irises dilated in excitement. The woman responded to them, carefully caressing their faces. As she bowed down to meet the critters’ gaze, strands of her hair got loose from the back of her ear. Promptly, the waves bounced. The man’s expression softened a fraction as he turned towards his daughter. “I know,” he said quietly. “It’s fine.” The girl looked at me again. “You’re snowy,” she said. I barked a laugh that was half hysterical, half amused. “I am. I’m very snowy.” She lifted her reindeer slightly, like it was offering me comfort. “Rudy keeps me warm,” she said seriously. “He’s magic.” My throat tightened and I shook my head slightly because I did not know why that made me want to cry.

A book came out along with his hand, both fully intact. “The Courage to Trust,” by Dr. Franklin Reed. He had to be joking. There were hidden cameras here somewhere, I just knew it. No fucking way was the god of wolves cracking open a self-help book from the mortal realm. Sure enough, he fanned through the book eagerly, skipping over several chapters in the process. The tip of his tongue appeared from between his plump lips. He found the page he’d been looking for and quickly skimmed it. With a satisfied hum, he chucked the book behind his shoulder where it was swallowed up by that strange, shimmering magic.

She reckoned that if Alex was there with him, he would definitely pick the same book. The story revolved around a stuffed rabbit sewn from velveteen. It was given as a Christmas present to a small boy. The boy plays with his other new presents and forgets the velveteen rabbit for a time. These presents are modern and mechanical, and they snub the old-fashioned velveteen rabbit. The wisest and oldest toy in the nursery, the Skin Horse, which was owned by the boy's uncle, tells the rabbit about toys magically becoming real due to love from children. The rabbit is awed by this idea, however, his chances of achieving this wish are slight.

The room had a great view of the kingdom with a few artworks and paintings of the previous werewolf rulers. Beside the bed, a shiny glass with crystal balls was placed as decor. The bed had fur blankets instead of duvet covers. Typical. Werewolves loved their fur. "No, Dolphy," she said without looking, then turned to see a wide-eyed Rudolph holding a crystal ball in his hands. "How did you know?" A sheepish Rudolph asked. "I know you like the back of my palm. You can't resist shiny things," she told him with a proud smile.

He took a key from his pocket and unlocked the door. The room was full of dust since it hadn't been cleaned for a while now. The shelves were filled with books lined the room, and some scrolls were rolled tightly and tied with strings. Steve hasn't been here in a long time, for years now. He walked to the far end where the oldest books were kept. Most of them were written in languages only known to werewolf elders. He went through the titles until his eyes landed on one covered in red leather. The edges of the book were worn, and the title was nearly faded.
