“Two weeks. My rules. You do what I say, when I say it. Then, three months no pay. After that, we talk salary. Agreed?”
Annabel swallowed, nodding. “Agreed.”
His eyes roamed her face, then down to her hands. “You don’t look convinced.”
She met his gaze, forcing a small smile. “I don’t have a choice, do I?”
“Good answer,” he said, smirking. “We start tomorrow.”
They spoke a few more minutes details, times, rules. She barely heard half of it; her mind was elsewhere. On the bills. On the empty fridge. On the way her life was folding in on itself.
