I sighed and shook my head, trying my best to ignore his protruding presence and I was successful for about twenty minutes until he opened his mouth “What are you running away from?” That sentence. But the forest is my safety, so I run.

"I’m leaving now." ​"Lei, wait—" Timothy reached for me again, his voice desperate. ​"Don't," I whispered, the word stopping him in his tracks. ​I didn't wait for a response. I turned and ran. I didn't head for the main doors or the ballroom; I bolted toward the narrow service corridor that led to the back exit. I pushed through the heavy steel doors and stumbled out into the cool night air, away from the music, away from the "great-grandchild" rumors, and away from the man who had just realized his mother had turned his love into a servant.

My body suddenly feels threatened as I yank my elbow off of his clasping, and he chuckles. Of course, he thinks I’m as weak as everybody else here thinks. “There’s no way I can do that, beautiful. Dylan dragged his exhausted body out of the hotel room, having tidied it up as neatly as possible. At least Bernie wouldn't suspect that he didn't have the courage to stay there.
