We all knew that this was not finished, but the wind was suddenly roaring louder, drowning out the distant gunshots. Getting to the Extraction Point Hours seemed to pass before the thick woodland gave way to the extraction spot, a slender, snow-covered valley. On the other side of the clearing, a lone, camouflaged helicopter waited, its motors humming softly against the roaring sky. A wave of relief washed over me—we had succeeded. An ambush occurred, however, and the air burst with gunfire as we emerged into the open. “GO!” We ran toward the helicopter that was waiting, and Damien roared back. Three soldiers were killed with deadly accuracy by Vanessa's rifle, which boomed from the hill.

--- A Sudden Encounter The car crested a hill, and as they descended, Maya spotted something up ahead—a black SUV parked on the shoulder of the road. “Alex,” she said, her voice low but urgent. “I see it,” Alex replied, his jaw tightening. As they approached, the SUV’s engine roared to life, pulling onto the road and blocking their path. Two more vehicles emerged from a side street, boxing them in. “It’s an ambush,” Camilla said, her voice edged with panic. “Hold on,” Alex barked, slamming the car into reverse. The tires screeched as he spun the car around, but the SUVs were quick to follow, their headlights cutting through the darkness like twin daggers.

I place my free hand atop hers instantly, squeezing tightly, while my index finger sitting coolly on the trigger fights to pull it. I turn, looking through the almost cracked windshield, if those fuckers—whoever they are—are still on our tail. There’s a black Mercedes with tinted windows, at the sharp bend. It’s parked there, but it’s obvious whoever is in it is watching our car go. Placing my gun on my thigh, I take out my phone and dial Leo’s number. “There was an ambush two streets from the hospital,” I say the second he picks up. “What?” “We’re at the hospital now, no casualties, but send reinforcements now.” Then I hang up.
