“I want us to have that.” Nero kisses my forehead, his lips lingering there for a moment. “Then we will.” Before I can respond, Nereo comes bounding over, flopping down onto the sand between us with a big grin on his face. “I didn’t catch the crab, but it’s okay,” he announces, completely unbothered. “Can we build a sandcastle together now?” I laugh, running my fingers through his messy hair. “Of course we can.” Nero stands, holding out his hand to help me up. “Let’s do it. The biggest sandcastle this beach has ever seen.”

We laughed and joked, feeling the simple yet precious joy. Mark looked at me. “Look, Dad! I can make a bigger sandcastle than yesterday!” Zoya exclaimed, starting to dig in the sand with her bare hands. Zara nodded in agreement, “Let’s build it together! We can add the shells we found yesterday.” We all got involved in creating a grand sandcastle. Every shell we found became a decoration to beautify the castle. As the sun rose higher, we had successfully built a magnificent sandcastle, complete with towers and sturdy walls.

No kill.” The tension in the van is raised and we all sit silently for the next 45 minutes until we stop about 200 feet down the road from the site. The first site of the old summer palace makes me sad.
