“I know you see me as family, ma, but that’s not what I meant. You’ve done so much for me, and I’m grateful, but I just… I wonder if there’s anyone else. Children? Relatives?”
Julia’s hand trembled slightly as she placed her teacup down. “You’re persistent,” she said quietly.
“Because I care,” Sarah replied.
For a long moment, Julia stared at the fire, her expression unreadable. Then, slowly, she spoke. “I had two sons,” she said. “Both gone now.”
Sarah’s heart stilled. “Gone?”
