Nora held the phone and typed. She sent the message. Then she looked at the archive around her the centuries of record, the careful notation, the specific weight of a place that had been holding what mattered for a very long time and she thought about a woman who was ninety-four years old and had a granddaughter who wanted to be a doctor and had spent the last two weeks speaking to her family about what had been kept and what had been lost and what was being restored. The granddaughter's name, Mara had mentioned in one of the calls, was Nora.

Nora's POV It was finally the day. After weeks of recovery, transformation, and a wedding that had started as a strategy and somehow turned into something I no longer had a clean word for, we were flying back to New York. Nora's POV I don't get on a bus. I don't leave the city. Instead, I take Chen's fifty dollars and use twenty of it to rent a locker at a 24-hour gym. The kind that doesn't ask questions if you pay cash. Somewhere I can shower. Somewhere I can keep my stuff safe. The other thirty goes toward a burner phone from a convenience store. Prepaid. Untraceable. If Marcus or Jade or the debt collectors are tracking my regular phone, they won't find me on this one.

But I’d seen her face. Pale, eyes distant, lips trembling when she whispered about the walls, the sound of footsteps that never belonged to anyone. Whatever Liam did to her… it had shredded something permanent.
