I held it with both hands. A fistful of my hair was snatched and he turned me to fully look at him. Before I could register his features, I pushed the sword upwards and into his abdomen as far as I could. His blood splattered on my nightwear and across my face. That was when I noticed his eyes. Or his lack of eyes thereof. He had no eyes, just like the woman at the tower. Just a face with every other feature asides eyes. I screamed when his body came tumbling down on me but now, he was lifeless. Using the last ounce of my energy, I pushed him aside and stood to my feet.

A shadow stretched over him, blotting out the weak morning sun. The lead blood-born entity stood at the edge of the ridge. Up close, it was colossal, its pale, rubbery flesh glistening with the dark brine of the Atlantic trenches. It tilted its featureless head, the massive, unhinged jaw twitching as its rows of translucent, needle-like fangs dripped black, corrosive saliva onto the heather.

With a determined silence, the burly man sliced his palm, causing a gush of blood to spill forth. The sudden gory spectacle left the onlookers stunned. Though he winced slightly, he persisted, allowing drops of blood to splatter onto the floor. As the crimson droplets met the ground, intricate patterns began to materialize, casting an eerie red glow. "By God..." gasped the astonished witnesses.

Blood welled, dark and rich, and her eyes fixed on it with that strange hunger I had seen in vampires before. But different. She looked hungry and horrified at the same time, like she was fighting herself.
