Fangs emerged. Power surged through her body like a storm. The air twisted. Blood erupted from the ground, writhing like living shadows. Marcus stared in horror. “Dear God… what is this?” Dr. Alaric’s smile widened. “The Black Blood, the hybrid lineage of Lilith and Draven. At last, it awakens.”

A human, at least. I wring my palms, they felt sandy. I opened my palms, looking into them. They were covered in ash. My arms. He looked like he was about to say something, but he was cut off when he started coughing violently. He spat out a mouthful of blackened blood. It made for a gruesome sight against the white carpet. Felix stared at the blood in disbelief before he jerked his head up to look at me. "Why?" I set my wine glass down and looked down at him from the tip of my nose. "I'm just fulfilling my responsibility as a mother." Felix's eyes widened when he finally registered my words. The wolfsbane worked quickly, especially since Felix had been caught completely off-guard. It didn't take long before he crumpled to the ground.

Sapphire flew through the forest, dodging trees and logs expertly, never losing speed. When we caught up with the fighting it looked exactly like what it was, a war zone. Dead men and women were everywhere, naked except for the blood that covered their bodies and the grass and leaves that stuck to their hair and wounds. So many eyes staring but seeing nothing. My chest grew tight as I looked out over the dead, so many lives lost, and for what? Land? Money? Power?

His eyes frozen in eternal fear as his body slumped forward. Liquid sprayed across my face, dripped from my chin, and continued to jet onto my feet from his headless body as he fell to the ground.
