I felt the pull of the villa behind me, the warm light from our bedroom a beacon of safety I was walking away from. Jurgina Bar’s flickering neon sign cast a sickly yellow glow on the street, illuminating a dark, peeling door. Inside, the noise was a physical thing, a cacophony of music, laughter, and slurred voices. The smell of stale beer and cigarette smoke clung to the air. I made my way to the second floor, my pulse a frantic drumbeat against my ears. The hallway was a long, dark tunnel. Room 8 was at the very end.

Jack, Herne, and Warren didn't move a muscle, when faced with the spectral image of the woman. Traditional buckskin adorned the slender body. She raised her hands above her head, "Well are you going to help? You are members of the Scald Crow aren't you?" Jack and Herne took a step back from the phantom, and pushed Warren forward, "You go, whelp."

Hopping the answer would be yes, I flipped to the introduction, the much-needed hope fluttering in my chest as I read. “From their temple origins to their violent renaissance in the Bloody War that birthed Henosis, Crowns of Shame have a complex past mixed with hope and cruelty alike. Despite its variety of intents and shapes, one thing remains the same throughout its history: the scar-tissue that defines it.” I flipped through the book, deterred by the word “scar-tissue”. I stopped at a page with a grotesque image of a man on his knees as someone carved a line across his forehead.

Alicia is lying on the ground by her back. Her whole body is numb. Her eyes are open wide towards the sky. White thunder goes from one end to another piercing the dark clouds. Her mind is filled with memories from her childhood. A young girl's face is turned towards the thunderous sky. "GO HOME," shouts a man with a dark brown face covered in dark black beards. He's sitting on his cart behind two bullocks. A wooden cave is over him, spreading over three feet behind him.

Lea replied, looking horrified. “What? No he would not say something as gruesome like that.” I said. Raven? Nope, he even fears the horror films about ghosts and crazy murders with a chainsaw, and he would say something like that? It would have terrified his brain. Lea raised her eyebrows at me, assessing if I was serious with what I had just said. “You are kidding me… Alpha Crowden? Alpha Crowden of Kingston Pack? Oh lady, I have heard stories about him already. Gruesome stories. His adventures, his kills, his missions, his battles, and blood, blood everywhere.”

“Be careful.” Shattered glass. Clouds. Lawn. Dirt and dead grass. The barren trees near the house and the jungle vine of Christmas lights in their branches. The blood-speckled cut-outs below them. The corpse of the kid who had made a run for it. A crow nestled on his broken skull. His eyes were gone, all plucked out. One dangled from the beak of the bird like a prize. Julia feared many things. Namely, the driver and her family—even Jack scared her to some degree. But above all else she feared those crows, including those now perched on the roof of the house up ahead, and that they would come for her before she was dead.

She giggled, leaned in, and pressed the half-filled glass into mine before slipping back into the crowd. “Don’t—” Andrew barked, but too late. I had already tilted the glass back and gulped it all. The bitter liquid burned my throat, but I swallowed it down, desperate for something, anything, to wash away the lump in my chest. Andrew snatched the empty glass from my hand, his expression dropping. For the first time, I saw something in his eyes that scared me more than his anger. Fear. Why was he afraid? Then I felt it.

Though the humans were hostile at first, they accepted them later on and the supernaturals continued to live among the humans. Fifty years later, the human government recruited the supernaturals to aid them with the crimes committed by psychotic supernaturals. The supernaturals had come together to form an agency called Shadow Crawlers, where all the supernaturals required to register. That way, they kept a tab on who was doing what. They had their own rules and regulations. Even the supernaturals arrested by the human officials were handed over to them. The Shadow Crawlers monitored the criminals and sometimes eliminated them to keep up peace between the races.

“In a modest community in New England, teenagers are kidnapped around night and… covered alive.” I interrupt and take a dry drink, rather stunned by the unreasonable comparability with our current reality. Days after the fact that they emerged changed, planting disorder and spreading fear, told by a long-standing petition from the parascientists known as the Fear Specialists. She rubbed on the spot. When Taheem had yanked her from the car and into the house from the back door, she had expected to be shoved into a dark cell, with damp cold floors and mice and lizards and crawling insects for companion. She had expected to be locked up with no blanket for warmth and given stale bread to eat and water to drink. So when he had led her upstairs and into this room, she had stood rooted and scared, wrapping her arms around her body and eyeing him from the corner of her eyes. What was he going to do?
