"Let her be miserable. She tried to destroy our lives and she failed. I hope every day in there is worse than the last." Last week Scarlet had received a letter that actually made her pause instead of immediately discarding it—a handwritten note from Savannah postmarked from a city three hours away where she'd apparently relocated after completing rehab.

“But I'll say it anywayAbout things that do not concern her.” Scarlett stands slowly and walks toward the window. Outside, the street looks peaceful. People crossing the road. Laughing. Oblivious. “She’s getting too close to things she doesn’t understand,” Scarlett continues. “And you know what happens to curious wolves.” Cecil does know. She nods once. Scarlett turns back around. “And Archie is circling her again.” There it is. That flare in Cecil’s chest. Hot. Immediate. Ugly. Scarlett sees it, of course, she does.

Chapter 19 Scarlett's POV I wasn't scared anymore. I was angry. Whatever Christian was hiding wasn’t ordinary. And I was done waiting for answers. I hurried past Clementina, my feet moving so fast I felt I was flying. Heat rushed to my face and with each step I was taking deep breaths, completely ignoring the elderly woman calling out to me from behind. I pushed the door of every room in the west wing until I found his bedroom door and shoved it hard enough that it banged against the wall.

“If you have need of anything, speak with Madame Miriam. She will see to you.” And with that, he was gone. The door closed. Milicent stood in the hush that followed, alone now not only in the room—but in thought. --- Scarlet sat in the smoke-filled chamber, the pipe resting between her fingers as tendrils of smoke curled toward the high ceiling. Her gaze was distant, her thoughts far from the room. The door creaked open, and her uncle entered. He halted at the sight of her. "I thought we had agreed you would conduct yourself with decorum," he said, his tone clipped. "How dare you take up a pipe again?"

A sleek black SUV pulled up near the edge of the forest road. The door flew open before the engine even fully stopped.

Scarlet was happy and thrilled to be out of the house, she knew about the people that he stationed outside the house to keep an eye on Darcy. She boarded a cab to the bar to see Frederic and tell him about the failure of their plan to have Alexander abducted. She got speechless as she got out of the cab and saw the Leader of the Reachers. “What are you doing here?” Scarlet managed to ask the question as she dragged him to the side of the bar that looked a bit dark because she didn't want Frederic to see him. “You're not supposed to be here.” She added as he flared up, raising his voice.

JUNE Underneath my door was a letter in scarlet red. I circled it cautiously, grazing my hand over it. I looked once more down the hallway, but no one was there. Who must have dropped it? The question rang in my mind the moment I returned to my room, the lingering thought of Colt leaving me as I tucked my diary carefully back into its box. I dropped the scarlet letter on the bed, still contemplating whether it was safe to open or not. I changed into my nightwear, a cute matching outfit, brushing the full length of my fiery hair while glancing at where the letter sat, unmoving.
