That sent a chill down my spine. We reached the gates. Two black SUVs idled nearby—Moretti security. Men stood alert, hands near weapons, eyes sharp. Dante spoke briefly to one of them, his tone all business now. “Any movement?” “No, sir. Car hasn’t moved.” “Heat signatures?” “Two inside. Driver and passenger.” My stomach dropped. Two. Marcus hadn’t just come alone. He’d come prepared. “Stay here,” Dante said, turning to me. I crossed my arms. “No.”

It was unclear if they had been there for thousands, or millions of years. All of a sudden, one of the spores split open. Out crawled a monster about a meter tall. The monster had completely green skin, two sharp ears, and four protruding, interlocked fangs. Its body was short but muscular. The monster squinted around blearily, before turning around to devour the green spore that it had come out of and letting out a satisfied burp. Just then, a stray deer trotted past. The green monster's ears perked up. It picked up a rock, hurling it out with all his might.

Everything was green. But not just gas this was deeper. Inside him. Around him. Through him. Noa’s body wasn’t his anymore. He floated in it. Watching. Listening. Screaming in silence. Sabine’s voice echoed like a goddamn metronome. “Let go. Don’t fight it. You were born for this.” He couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t scream. His fingers twitched. His heart slowed. The monster wasn’t coming.
