Ash was a Southern wolf. For my entire life, her fur had been a sandy brown. But as I stared at my trembling hands, I watched midnight-black fur spread across my skin. My breath caught. No. That wasn't possible. Ash wasn't black. She had never been black. Yet the dark fur kept spreading, swallowing every trace of brown as sharp claws burst from my fingertips. Somewhere beyond the panic, a terrible realization stirred. Something was changing. Something inside me wasn't the same anymore. The scent of my Southern wolf exploded across the grounds. It wasn't the crisp, piney frost of the North; it was a wild, burning heat, a scent of sun-baked earth traced with lavender.

But clearly he couldn’t see what I did, because when I looked at Asher, I did not see a commoner. Right before us all, Asher leaped into the air and did what should only be possible on a full moon, he shifted. His wolf’s fur was pure white and its eyes glowed—not green, but red. Anger, fear, sadness, and defeat were what crossed through his eyes.

I was fighting my wolf and trying to suppress her from coming to the surface, but her cage was broken after a few minutes and I gave in to her. She forced Kyle to his knees eyes flaring red and anger burning through her. We glared at him before bending down and sinking our teeth into his neck.

Alexander tensed, hand moving to his weapon, but the man continued his patrol, unaware of their presence. "Six minutes until the road team creates their distraction," Alexander murmured. "Then we move." Stefan nodded, clutching the small fishing lure Margaret had given him. The wood felt rough against his palm, a connection to a time when Camille had been happy, before he and Rose had destroyed everything. Thunder crashed overhead as lightning lit the sky. I was about to fall to my knees again. I would have. The pride and dignity I'd had walking in here had been gone for hours.

Sure, she wasn't a kick-ass supernatural hunter like her brothers, but she wasn't totally helpless. His lips curved into a grin that made a storm of butterflies come to life in her stomach. It had a distinctive shape to it, as if he'd been slashed by something. Was it from another dragon's claw? She had to admit she was fascinated. The Brotherhood files on the Barinov dragons were slim. She wished she knew more about him, and she had a feeling she was about to.

“No. But I should have. Guys like you usually bring them with you.” I smirked. “Guys like me?” “Leather, tattoos… gunshot wound,” he said dryly. “You scream of trouble.” He wasn’t wrong. “And you don't want any of that?” “Name’s Ash,” I muttered when he didn't reply and finally regretted it.
