I breathed in deeply, closing my eyes and relying on my nose to tell them apart. Ash was the first one I recognized. I smiled, pointing in the scent’s direction. “That’s Ash.” I opened my eyes to look. He was the biggest of them all. He had deep grey fur with a deeper shade of grey line cutting from under his chin to over his shoulder. He looked so beautiful. I closed my eyes and tried to pick out someone else. “That’s my dad.” I opened my eyes to see. He had black fur, with a patch of bronze on his belly and hind legs. It was weird seeing my dad like that—not human.

The baby kicked a strong, confident thump against my ribs. "Then we end this," I finished. "For good." Ashren squeezed my hand. "For the pup," he said. "For the pup," I agreed. The Sun’s Fury hurtled through the void, carrying a dying man, a pregnant queen, and a wolf who had seen too much darkness to ever be afraid of the night again.

"My Little Wolf!" Ash burst through the door, his body radiating the chill from running through the forest, his silver-streaked black fur slowly retracting. His molten eyes locked onto mine as he sniffed the air, wary and wild.

Two months later, his friends asked again, "Tristan, how long has it been since Esther contacted you?" Tristan froze, unable to respond. It had been a while since Esther had reached out to him. The home that had once been theirs felt empty without her. It was just cold brick walls now and could no longer be called a home. "This isn't right. Esther's always been soft and gentle, but now she's acting so decisively." Asher said he had found rogues fighting close to Keira’s hut, but Scar was a Moonclaw thug, not a rogue. How did Asher find her, and who were the rogues he killed? His story was off. Ryk nodded, then showed Scar photos of Asher and Konan. Scar had begged while saying he didn’t know Asher, no matter how many times he was tortured he seemed to maintain his stance at not knowing any of the two men.

His predatory gaze flickered over to me, sending a chill down my spine. Ash stepped in front of me, blocking the rogue’s view. “You will regret those words,” he said, his voice dripping with menace. The rogue ignored him, addressing his pack with a jeering tone. “Boys, it’s been a while since we tasted women. Shall we have some fun before we kill them?” Sickening laughter erupted from the rogues, their leers making my stomach churn. Ash’s fury as if burst at that instant. “I will pluck your eyes out and feed them to the ravens,” he snarled, lunging at the scarred man.
