My chest trembled at the thought that Skye wanted to do more with me in the future, that we’d have a lifetime, potentially, hopefully, of exploring together.
Then, in the distance, there was a scream. It sounded as though it had been ripped out of their lungs, flayed from deep within their throat. It was genderless, ageless, and, as it echoed through the meadow, it felt timeless, too, as though I’d never stop hearing it. It was wretched, and, for a second, I froze.
Then I dropped Skye’s hand, and I ran towards the sound of the scream.
