“I don’t see why I should. I want to enjoy myself before I start thinking about a mate again.”
His laughter filled the room, but I could still sense the faint sadness behind it. Sean had always used humor to hide his pain. I knew why. His mate had died during childbirth years ago. The loss nearly destroyed him. For months, he was a shadow of himself angry, distant, and broken.
Seeing him laugh now, even if it was forced, was something I cherished. At least he was trying.
“Don’t worry,” he said as he opened the door. “I’ll keep my ears open. If there’s anything strange going on in the woods, I’ll find out.”
