The wind tore at my hair as I moved toward the water, the scent of salt clinging to the air. In the distance, a lone ship floated on the sea. Sleek. Still. Predatory. Closer by, tied to the edge of the dock, was a strange hybrid vehicle, part hovercraft, part speedboat. Its engine idled with a low hum, as if waiting for me. “That must be it,” I said, more to myself than anyone else. “You sure you want to go through with this?” Liz asked softly. “No,” I admitted. “But I’m going anyway.”

Seaweed was artfully draped on top in lieu of vines, and an HY was engraved at the front. The air carried a salty tang, mingling with the sweet scent of sunscreen, creating a blissful atmosphere. We kicked off our sandals and made our way to a spot near the water's edge. Come sail again. You’ll see.” When they were done with their meal, they took after-lunch refreshments on the ship’s deck—more limeade for Evelyn and Eastside beer for Andrew and Blink. It gave them time to watch more of the surfing efforts and activity on the shore. The sea roils, shading from blue-green to green-brown. A wave rides in, dark with silt, flecked with foam, carrying seaweed and tiny fingernail-sized clam shells, dumping it on the sand, then sweeping much of it away as the water retreats.
