Lucien Arden took the throne. He crowned Rosalind Hartwell empress. And Evelyn Hartwell—the principal wife who had fought at his side all the way from embattled prince to emperor—was given only the rank of Imperial Consort. The day the decree came down, Silverleaf Palace was completely silent. Every servant kept their head lowered and hardly dared to breathe, afraid that Evelyn would weep, or throw things, or come apart the way any consort does when the emperor's favor leaves her. Evelyn simply accepted the decree, calmly. “I thank His Majesty for his generosity.” There was no movement in her voice and nothing in her face. Even her beautiful eyes held not the slightest trace of grief.

Wren Carter The monotonous sound of beeping kept me company as I swiped the books across the counter. I packed the books and handed them to the customer. The cycle repeated again. It was not stuffy here instead, once in a while some customer would show up wanting to exchange or buy a stack of books. It was almost noon when I decided to take my break. I went over to the cafe side of the store and whipped up a small cup of cortado. I sat near one of the windows as I gazed down the busy street through the shop windows.

I burst out laughing. “For the lady, a decaf cappuccino with whip cream, and filter coffee for me.” I put in our order. “I need your help with something, and I know you know something or rather have something against the Cooper family, especially Mark Cooper.” He didn’t look surprised; he just smiled and set his gaze back while looking at me.

In the end, Natalie had advised that I stick to the genre that I was already good at. Thankfully it had been wonderful advice that I had chosen to follow and it had turned out to be the right decision. I pushed the door of the bookshop open, already loving the additional smell of coffee that I could detect in the air. I scanned the room, realizing they had somehow managed to double it as both a bookshop and a coffee shop in the few months since I'd last visited. I was immediately tempted to get myself a full cup of cappuccino but I was watching my caffeine intake.

I snap out of my thoughts and turn to face Cal and nod before I look back at the building across the street from me. Cal pulls me to follow him and so I put it down to Déjà vu. following behind him, I focus on where we are going. Long forgetting about that building. I mean, this is my first time in this place. “We’re here.” I look at where he has brought me and I’m blown away. It’s a bookstore with a little coffee shop inside. The smell of freshly ground coffee makes me take a deep breath in as we enter the shop. The little bell dings and something flashes in my head of a bell dinging above a door. The surroundings melt away and in it’s place I see a counter and two women working together.

It opened on a different tab and I scrolled, looking at many houses with similar styles. A thud on the table startled me. I looked up to see my assistant. She had a stern face as she placed the right amounts of sugar and milk into the liquid in the cup. I peeped and lifted my eyebrows at her. "You asked for coffee," she said moving the cup onto a coaster. She pushed it towards me. I relaxed in my chair as I looked at her amused. "You asked for coffee madam." I looked at my phone and coughed a laugh.

She gleefully clapped her hands together as she took in the sight of all the comfy chairs and intricate stands containing tea-time snacks. She was so excited that almost all of her walls fell as she eagerly dragged me along with her by the hand to one of the back walls of the bookshelves. "I-I h-heard that this café was able to g-get a-access to n-new books before t-they were even officially a-announced to t-the public a-and it's a-actually t-true." She had a big bright smile on her lips as she wobbly reached up for one of the higher shelves, trying to reach for one of the thick books resting up there. "I-I w-was reading t-this s-series r-recently, and it e-ended on a c-cliffhanger, which m-

SYDNEY The coffee shop, a quaint haven nestled on the corner of a bustling street, held an air of familiarity that wrapped around me like a comforting embrace. The warm, golden light spilled through the large, steamed-up windows, casting dancing patterns on the polished wooden floors. Conversations ebbed and flowed, a symphony of voices that blended seamlessly with the soft melodies of a guitar strumming in the background. I sat at a corner table, fingers tracing the delicate porcelain of my latte cup. Each sip sent tendrils of warmth through me, a soothing contrast to the whirlwind of thoughts in my mind. Opposite me, Knight sat with an easy grace, his eyes harboring a quiet understanding.
