Arie’s POV Two Years Earlier The first time I saw Nicholas Contini bleeding, I was wearing a white dress. By the end of that night, his blood would stain my hands, ruin the lace around my sleeve, and mark the beginning of a secret neither of us would know how to escape. But when I unlocked my father’s study, I believed the room would be empty. It had remained closed since his death two years earlier. Uncle Angelo possessed the official key, but Papa had once given me another and made me promise not to tell anyone. I carried it everywhere, even after there was no longer anyone waiting for me inside.

“Don’t be so sure. If Cassian presents this in court, you stand a very high chance of losing. Look closely, the date is right here. He won’t just come at you with words, Aria. As the secretary became slightly under the booze’s influence, she leaned to her boss and flirted with him, “Don't you think we should spend more time like this at the bar, Glenn?” ‌ “Of course, babe,” Glenn put his arm around Marrie’s waist and pulled her closer. “Just you remember, we need to keep this relationship a secret from any of Autoekomsten’s employees, including Kevin.” ‌ Marrie giggled and kissed Glenn’s cheek. My handwriting looked almost foreign to me, as if someone else had written it. My pulse refused to slow down. I transferred the photos from my phone to my laptop and encrypted them under a hidden folder labeled “Recipes.” It was almost poetic. No one ever looked there.
