A city bathed in radiance. A thousand voices lifted in song. And at the center of it all, a figure cloaked in white light, standing before the great altar of the Church. Their hands were raised as the air around them split into fire and wings. The sight burned through her vision. The light was alive, too pure, too violent. The glow around her hand dimmed, and color rushed back into the world. She stumbled, and Lucien caught her before she could fall.

Lucian’s roar became a strangled sound. Seraphina bit harder. Something cracked. Not bone. Not only bone. Something deeper. The sky shook with it. Lucian’s wings faltered. Seraphina released him and breathed golden fire straight into the wound she had made. The flame poured over his throat, into the black veins, through the gold scales, and Lucian fell.

In the end, her strength ran out, and she collapsed. As she fell, it felt as if a pair of strong arms caught her. Through hazy vision, she saw Kieran's face as he said, "Hang in there. Guarding this place is your duty." He wanted to leave, but he didn't want to see the balance of the world destroyed, so he stepped in. Only one thought burned in Seraphina's heart: She had to hold this place! With that, a blazing, deep crimson light burst from her body, like the core of the sun itself. Her body felt as if it were being roasted in lava, and Kieran's hands burned so badly that he had to let go.
